ARTIST STATEMENT

Words are lively creatures, subject to change, with their own histories, and secrets. When they gather together they are often sullen, sometimes rebellious. Poems make words work hard, as single units, and as they relate to each other. Poems do not need to be small grey lines clinging sadly to the left margin. In these poems, in books and on the walls, the poems find different ways to be. As single words (such as in Needles) they change when one moves; or they gain a new meaning by repetition (such as in the Nice repeated so often to girls and women). Some poems are meant to slow down the perception of the words in order to see the movement they embody (quads). All of these poems are in some way experiments in words becoming.
